Hardness Testing

Material hardness is a generic term for stiffness or temper and defiance to scratching, abrasion or cutting. The properties of a metal allow it to resist permanent deformation (bending, breaking or becoming misshapen) when a load is applied: clearly, the greater the hardness, the greater resistance to unwelcome change.

The most common form of hardness test involves resistance to indentation; and this is done by pressing a rounded indenter into the surface of a static load.

In keeping with our commitment to the latest technological innovations, ITCL technicians use Dynapocket™, a small, integrated digital hardness tester operating to the criteria of the standardised dynamic rebound method. The compact design of this equipment allows easy, on-site testing of solid, fixed components even in difficult access conditions. A key feature is the instant and reproducible measurements that can be made independent of impact direction. This is achievable due to a patented signal processor.

We also deploy Mic 10 hardness testers with a Vickers diamond to indent test material. With conventional low load instruments the indent is measured microscopically, however the Mic 10 electronically evaluates the indent by means of ultrasonic contact impedance. This offers a major advantage over visual inspection, even on small indents, as high test repeatability is assured. Measurements are taken under load and based on the full indent area not just the length of indent diagonals.

  • On a range of materials including solid, coarse grained objects, forged parts with homogenous surface structures and cast items
