The Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive (known also as ‘lead free’) constrains the use of six hazardous materials found in electrical and electronic products. All applicable products currently in the EU market must meet RoHS compliance criteria.

The Directive specifies maximum levels for certain hazardous materials as follows:
  • Cadmium (Cd): 100 ppm
  • Mercury (Hg): 100 ppm
  • Lead (Pb): 1000 ppm
  • Polybrominated Biphenyls (PBB): 1000 ppm
  • Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDE): 1000 ppm
  • Hexavelent Chromium (CrVI): 1000 ppm

WEEE Compliance

A further EU Directive legislates for the treatment, recovery and recycling of electric and electronic equipment. WEEE (Waste from Electrical and Electronic Equipment) was introduced to police the high levels of toxic e-waste currently dumped in landfills. All applicable products currently in the EU market must be WEEE compliant and carry the ‘Wheelie Bin’ sticker.
